Instagram is constantly being updated to improve the user experience, and while the ability to tag locations in posts is not new, it’s seriously underutilized. Instagram has a huge user base of around two billion people, which means that standing out can be tough, no matter how good your content is.

While certain kinds of posts get more interaction on average, tagging your location can help you to reach people in that area and promote more organic engagement. If you are running a business, this will be incredibly helpful, as it will increase your page’s exposure to potential customers in the area. This is what makes the ability to create a location so useful!

How to Add a Location to Instagram

So, you want to add a location to your bio or one of your posts – this is a very easy process and you can do it before or after uploading your content to Instagram.

We’ll start with adding a location to your bio. This is essential for businesses, especially those with bricks and mortar locations. Do note, however, that you need to have a business profile to add your location in this way. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Open the Instagram app and navigate to your profile

If you want to tag your business location (or any location) in your post, you can do so while uploading.

  1. Simply add your image and filter it as usual
  2. Press Next
  3. On the following screen, press Add Location
  4. Type in the location you want to add to your post
  5. Press the location when it shows on-screen
  6. Upload your post
  7. Once it has uploaded, your post will have a tagged location

How to Create a Location on Instagram

If the location you want to add to your profile or post does not exist, you can now add it to Instagram using Facebook’s ‘check-in’ feature. This is exciting for new business owners in particular, as it allows you to put yourself on the map – literally!

An important factor to keep in mind, though, is that you can’t yet create a location on Instagram; you have to do this through Facebook. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Facebook app
  2. Tap ‘check-in’
  3. Type in the name of the location you want to add
  4. Press add
  5. On the next page, select a category for the location
  6. Press ‘I’m Here Right Now’ if you want to use your location, or type in the street address
  7. Add comment about the location if you wish to

This will create a location in Facebook. Once you have done this, you can open the Instagram app and make a new post. When you progress to the next page, search for the location you just created and add it to your post. Just like that, you have created a location for Instagram

Can I hide my location on Instagram?

The process for hiding your location from Instagram is the same as listed above for Facebook – with one key exception. On certain Android phones, you may need to disable location tracking (for both apps) via the app management screen.

This is also in the settings menu. Simply find App Management and then find Instagram (or Facebook) on the list, and select Location. Deny location permission and your phone will not share this information with Instagram.
