Hashtags are a really good way of connecting with content that interests you, by searching for specific hashtag trends and words which are linked to videos that you enjoy.
Sometimes, however, viewing a video that uses a specific hashtag will fill your TikTok ‘For You’ page with content that uses the same hashtag, whether or not it’s something you’re directly interested in. And with TikTok rife with trends that boast multiple meanings and underlying themes, often a single hashtag can lead to a plethora of content – some of which is relevant and other videos which are not.
In this article, we’re taking you through the steps to block a hashtag, so you no longer have to see content you’re uninterested in.
Why Block Hashtags?
Just as you might block a user whose content you don’t want to see, blocking hashtags is a way of exerting more control over your experience on TikTok and the way you use the app.
When you block a hashtag, you will no longer see posts that use that hashtag in their caption. This helps you to further filter the content that the app feeds into your ‘For You’ page and onto your homepage.
Here’s how to do it…
5 Steps to Block a Hashtag
- Open TikTok and navigate to your profile page, clicking on the menu button in the top right hand corner which is indicated by the three horizontal lines
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’
- Click on ‘Content Preferences’ then ‘Filter Video Keywords’
- Select the ‘Add Keyword’ button in the centre of the screen
- Add any keywords and hashtags that you want to filter out of your TikTok browser experience
NOTE: At the bottom of the page you can filter these keywords and hashtags from both your ‘For You’ page and from your ‘Following’ content – helping you to further tailor and optimise your experience.
And voila! Once words are added to this list, you will find that they are filtered out of your TikTok app. You can remove any blocked words and hashtags by returning to this area of your settings and deleting the word from your list.
Happy filtering!
