There are times when search suggestions can be really useful – and there are times when they simply get in the way.
If you are an avid user of Instagram, particularly as a platform for inspiration or content ideas, then you will likely be pretty familiar with the search bar and the plethora of suggestions that Instagram likes to offer.
But what happens when you want to clear those suggestions and start from scratch?
Well, the bad news is that once you start typing, there is no way to remove the suggestions that Instagram presents underneath the search bar – regardless of whether they are accounts or key search terms that you might be typing. Instagram uses unknown data to predict where you might be going with your search, and while it is safe to assume that the suggested accounts are ones you visit often, the search terms that appear can be based on pretty much anything.
So, what can you do?
Clear Search History
The one part of Instagram search that you do have control over is your search history.
It’s important to note that this can only be viewed and cleared before you start typing.
To clear your history, click on the magnifying glass along the bottom of your app homepage, and then click inside the search bar at the top of the Discovery page. Before you start typing, you will see a list of all the accounts and search terms that you have recently searched for – alongside a grey cross on the far right hand side of each item.
Selecting that cross will remove the search from your history, giving you a reset on your search page in terms of previous search results.
Reset Your Search Suggestions Manually
Okay, this tip has some success in terms of altering which accounts in particular Instagram recommends when you start typing – but it takes time and is by no means a quick or guaranteed fix.
If you want to hide one particular account that you search for often underneath others, then you can start searching and clicking on other accounts to pull them ahead of the one you’re trying to hide.
You can also do this with related search terms and keywords, hiding your recent typed search activity under an Instagram-shaped disguise…
So, while Instagram may not offer a one-size-fits-all solution to clearing Instagram suggestions as you type and search, it does grant you some control over how your search page is presented and used. We hope this helps!
