Text to speech is a feature on TikTok which transforms anything that you type out into your video into a voiceover.

It is considered by many TikTok creators and users to be one of the easiest ways of personalising your video, layering the speech over the top of any other audio so that your video benefits from instant context and an accessible caption.

Here’s how to do it…

6 Steps to Use the Text to Speech Feature

  1. Click on the plus sign in the centre at the bottom of your TikTok home screen
  2. Record your video or select ‘Upload’ then choose the pictures or video clips that you want to upload as part of your TikTok video – making sure that the ‘Video’ format is selected if all of your content is images
  3. Click ‘Next’ then add any sound that you want to, using the feature at the top of the screen
  4. Now, select the ‘Aa’ icon down the right hand side of the screen to add text
  5. As you type, a button will appear above your text which reads ‘Text to Speech’. NOTE: This will only appear if your content is set to a Video format rather than a carousel of photos
  6. Click on this button and hear your text converted into your very own, tailormade, voiceover

You will find that your text is automatically read out in a default voice, though you can browse countless variations and voice types using the Text to Speech editing menu. These voices include, but are not limited to, known characters and seasonal voices, generic voices, and more,

Once you’ve chosen your voice type, you can playback the entire video complete with your voiceover to see how it corresponds with the video play.

And voila! Not only does this make your content stand out and add a personalised layer to your audio, but it also makes your video more accessible for those who may not be able to read the text or any captions.
