When we talk about muting something, specifically an app, there are a two main options that we could be referring to…
- To mute the notifications on TikTok so that you are not informed every time someone you follow posts something new
- To mute the sound on TikTok, so that when you open the app it doesn’t immediately play the audio from the first video on your For You feed
In this article, we’re going to let you know how to do both.
How to Mute Notifications
If you want to mute notifications and prevent TikTok from delivering notifications either inside or outside of the app, then you will need to access your in-app settings as well as device settings.
The in-app settings are the best way to minimise and mute notifications from interrupting your browsing experience, while device settings enable you to switch off push notifications on your phone or tablet.
To access your in-app settings, follow these 3 steps:
- Navigate to your profile page and click on the menu button in the top right hand corner, indicated by three horizontal lines
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Notifications’
- Here you can control all notifications for different actions and activity in the app. To switch off push notifications use the top option – to switch off notifications received within the app, use the second option, and switch off the toggle for all individual activities
Once you’ve done this, you can also switch off all notifications on your device which relate back to TikTok as an extra barrier.
How to Open Your App With Muted Sound
There are two different settings which specifically deal with the sound of the first TikTok video that starts playing when you open the app.
The first is an option to completely mute the app, so that no sound is emitted even as the first video starts to play.
The second is an automated volume adjustment which adjusts the volume of your device when opening the app, so that it isn’t too loud.
To access these options, follow these 3 steps:
- Navigate to your profile on TikTok and click on the three horizontal lines in the top right hand corner to open the menu
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Playback’ in the Content and Display menu
- You will find the two options with a toggle for them both. The default is to play sound with your videos but adjust it, so you will likely find the top toggle is switched off while the bottom one is switched on. To open TikTok on mute, make sure to switch on the toggle for ‘Open TikTok on Mute’
And there you have it! Two different ways to mute TikTok and personalise your experience on the app.
