How to Open Instagram Messages Without Marking Them As ‘Seen’

Have you ever opened an Instagram message and forgot to reply straight away, leaving the other user on “read” and unsure why you never responded?

Well, this hack is going to help you to open messages and read them, without them being marked as seen for the other user. 

The benefit? You can check the message quickly, and then go back to it and open and respond properly when you have time. Or, if the message is from a user that you don’t want to engage with, you can check the message and then delete it – without them ever knowing that you’ve opened the message. 

5 Steps to Open a Message Secretly

1. Navigate to the Instagram message inbox, by clicking on the paper airplane in the top right hand corner of your home screen
   
   
2. Once the inbox has loaded, and the unread message is there in bold (marking it as unread), open your device’s shortcut menu
   
3. Select the icon which switches the device into airplane mode – disconnecting it from the internet
   
   
4. Now open the message and read it
5. Close Instagram completely, and then take your phone off airplane mode again

When you open Instagram, you will see that the message is still in bold and marked as unread, as if you never opened it. 

This is because, by taking your phone into airplane mode so that it was not connected to the internet while reading the message, the app was unable to track the action. So, as far as Instagram knows, the message was never opened or accessed – and the message will remain unread in the eyes of the other user.

Once you’ve done this, you can proceed as you wish – either opening and responding to the message on another occasion when you have more time, or deleting it completely.
