TikTok is committed to delivering every user with a positive experience, using its comprehensive algorithm to identify trends in what users watch and engage with, and pledging to show them similar content on the ‘For You’ page.
The aim of the platform is to connect users with content that they will enjoy, using previous engagement and activity as a basis for this.
However, sometimes the odd video that you are not interested may appear – reminding you that sometimes even the most sophisticated systems need a helping hand in delivering a great experience.
Here’s how to control your content preferences on TikTok, removing certain videos and ensuring that you aren’t exposed to content that doesn’t interest you.
How to Tell TikTok You’re Not Interested in Certain Videos
If a video appears that you don’t like, or the tone or content in the video doesn’t appeal to you, then you can let TikTok know you’re not interested in this content via two methods.
- Press and hold on the video until a pop up menu appears. Tap ‘Not Interested’
- Click on the sweeping arrow icon and select ‘Not Interested’
This move will remove the specific video and let TikTok know that this isn’t the kind of content that you want to see.
How to Report a Video
If a video appears that you find distressing or feel is in violation of the user terms and community guidelines, then the best thing to do is to report it.
You can do this by pressing the same sweeping arrow icon as mentioned above, selecting ‘Report’ and then giving your reason for the report.
Again, this will remove the video from your feed and will escalate your concerns to one of the TikTok moderators working behind the scenes.
How to Change Your Preferences
If there are specific topics that you don’t want to see referenced on your ‘For You’ page, then you can also change your content preferences in your settings.
Navigate to your profile page and then to the ‘Settings and Privacy’ menu via the button in the top right hand corner. Scroll down to the ‘Content Preferences’ option where you will see a number of ways that you can filter and block certain types of content.
The ‘Filter Video Keywords’ tool will allow you to block any video that references a specific topic. For example, if you’re got married and want to remove all wedding content, adding the keyword ‘Wedding’ here will remove all relevant content.
You can also turn on Restricted mode which cleans up any content that could be deemed inappropriate for specific audiences.
You can even turn on a STEM feed which keeps content heavily focussed on Science and Maths – a relatively new feature that’s packed with educational content!
Using this content preferences tool gives you more control over what you see and what you don’t see on your TikTok ‘For You’ page and main feed.
Any and all of the tools mentioned in this article are designed to help users control and shape their experience on the app, so that they see videos that they are interested in and engaged with on a daily basis. We hope this helps!
