Regular Instagram users may have noticed a recent feature appearing in recent months, specifically when they head to their DM inbox…
The notes feature is a new form of update which is part-Instagram-story and part-Tweet – combining two of the most successful apps to create a short form style of content for Instagram.
Here’s how they work – and how to turn them off.
What Are Notes On Instagram?
A note on Instagram is like a short form update, sharing what you’re thinking or feeling in 60 characters or less.
You can attach music to your note, with many users accessing the feature to share a song that they can’t get out of their head, or to let users know about something exciting on the horizon. It could be a personal life update or milestone; it could be a pending business launch; how you use the feature is up to you.
These updates disappear in 24 hours in the same way that Instagram stories do, making them a short-lived but effective way of sharing quick messages and updates with followers.
Can You Turn Notes Off?
The beauty of Instagram notes at the moment is that they aren’t super invasive on the screen, and so even if those who you are following do use notes, they won’t have a big impact on your experience. You don’t even receive a notification that a note has been posted, making it a very minor part of the overall Instagram user journey.
Having said that, if someone is posting notes that you don’t want to see, you can mute them – by pressing and holding on the note or user whose note you want to hide and selecting ‘Mute’.
In short, while notes are not a function you can “switch off”, you can take steps to minimise exposure to the notes and updates of those users who you don’t want to interact with.
