Are you one of those Instagram users who prefers more regimented photo content and static posts?

You may be wondering if it’s possible to turn off reels and therefore avoid exposure to the short chunks of video, complete with audio soundtracks and often trending concepts.

The answer? Unfortunately reels are not something that you can “turn off”. However, you can minimise your access to them by avoiding the reels tab and quickly scrolling past any newsfeed post which is a reel in disguise.

Remember, in order for a reel to be fully viewed with sound and the full screen view, you need to click on it. If you don’t click, you can at least bypass the soundtrack and full view of a reel.

Hiding Certain Types of Reel

While reels are not something you can switch off completely, you can hide certain types of reel from your feed to minimise exposure to content that you don’t want to see.

The best way to do this is by reacting to and manually ‘Hiding’ any content that you don’t like the look of or want to see – therefore letting Instagram know not to show you this style of content again.

To do this, you need to open the reel in full screen mode (sorry, yes that does mean you’ll hear the sound attached to it) then click on the three horizontal dots underneath the engagement icons.

From here, you can Report the reel (if it’s offensive), tell Instagram that you’re not interested, or Manage your Suggested content and tailor your experience on the app.

Hopefully, this helps you to manage your user experience on Instagram and minimise reels, even though you can’t remove them entirely!
