How to Remove Sound From Your Own Stories
- From your profile page, click on the plus sign in the square along the top of the screen, and select ‘Create Story’
- Find the video footage you want to upload
- Along the top of the screen on the edit page, you will see a volume indicator / speaker icon. Click on it – this will automatically turn off the sound and completely mute your video clip
Once you post your story, you will now find that the sound is gone, and it is just the visual footage that followers will see.
Why Remove Sound When Watching Stories?
If you’re watching Instagram stories in public, then most consider is to be socially acceptable to keep unwanted noise and audio at a minimum. Unless you have headphones to hand, turning the sound down or off when scrolling through stories is the safest way of ensuring you aren’t suddenly blaring music or the background noise of a friend’s video to everyone around you.
Now, it’s important to note here that while Instagram reels have made the mute function super easy (a quick tap on the screen will switch the volume off completely!), Instagram stories are not as easy. If you want to remove the sound when watching stories, you need to manually switch the volume down to zero on your device, using the buttons on the sides of your smartphone or device.
If your device is in silent mode, then stories will usually play in mute mode – until you select the volume button. This automatically switches them out of silent mode.
