Muting someone’s Instagram story can be done within three seconds directly on the homepage. All you need to do is press and hold on their profile picture on your homepage in the story carousel and select ‘Mute’.
But what about when you change your mind and decide to unmute them? With their profile picture no longer appearing along the scrolling carousel on the top of your homepage, how do you access their story to unmute it?

3 Steps to Unmute Someone’s Story
- Head to the profile page of the user whose story you have muted
- Click on the button that says ‘Following’ then select ‘Mute’
- You will see both a stories and posts toggle – make sure that both are switched on to ensure access and visibility of both stories and posts
Of course, there many be cases of users whose stories you have muted, only to find that you have forgotten who they are or what their username is.
In this case, you can scroll through the carousel of stories on your home screen to identify those which are greyed out. Any greyed out profile pictures have been muted – to unmute, press and hold on the profile picture and select ‘Unmute’.
