Instagram users, especially those who follow influencers and business profiles, may already be aware of the idea of “going live”.
To go live on Instagram is to create content which is live streamed through the platform, allowing users to connect and watch along, while commenting and sending interactive emojis and reactions.
Here’s how, as a user, you can join an Instagram Live and watch along in real time (or after the Live has ended).
How to Join an Instagram Live and Watch in Real Time
When you open the Instagram app, you will see a horizontal line of profile pictures, indicating that those who you follow have updated or added to their story.
If a profile picture has a colourful circle around it and the word ‘Live’ on show, then you know that they are currently streaming live content.
Clicking on the profile picture will immediately connect you with the live stream. Other users will be able to see that you have joined, as will the creator who is live streaming. During the stream, you can comment on what is going on, with many creators responding to questions and comments as they appear.
It’s important to note here that when you join an Instagram Live, you join it in real time – meaning that the content will not start again. If you miss part or all of a live stream, then you will need to see if the user uploads the content to their profile after the live has ended. You can check this using the following steps.
How to Watch an Instagram Live After Its Been Aired
If you miss part or all of an Instagram Live, then you may be wondering if it’s possible to catch up once the live stream has ended.
Users and creators do not have to reshare content – meaning that if they want to, they can end the live stream and the content will disappear forever.
Alternatively, they may choose to share the live stream to their Instagram Story where it will remain for 24 hours (as with any Instagram Story), or they might decide to post it to their profile as a grid post. This kind of content is known as IGTV, and while you cannot react live and see your comment or reaction appear in live time on the feed, you can still like and comment on the content as if it were a normal video.
Have you ever gone Live on Instagram, or are you more of a silent viewer?
