What Are Doubloons on TikTok?

The ever-changing, endlessly innovative model of TikTok means that new trends are always appearing on the app – whether it be a new challenge, a video format, or an intriguing use of a new phrase of word.

When the word ‘doubloon’ popped up on TikTok, people were confused.

Back in the 1800s, a ‘doubloon’ was a form of Spanish currency. So what’s it doing on TikTok now?

On TikTok, a doubloon is a kind of concept currency through which people can gain or lose doubloons by watching and engaging in certain video trends. But it’s not real.

How Do Doubloons Work on TikTok?

One of the most notable example of doubloons at play on TikTok involves a cat. When users see this cat in their For You feed, the cat tells them if they have earned or lost doubloons – pushing them into debt or crediting them with doubloon growth.

This is referred to as the ‘doubloon economy’, with anyone now able to weigh in with their own video that links back to doubloons.

In the simplest terms, this is a concept currency that has been built into a meme – inviting countless users to engage and get involved in the trend.

Have you seen the doubloon cat or engaged with other content that revolves around the receipt or loss of doubloons?
