What do you do when someone you follow on Instagram posts too often, or posts things that you don’t want to see every time you scroll through your newsfeed?
There are a few different things you could do – but not all of them are likely to be popular decisions.
You could block or unfollow them, but that runs the risk of starting arguments or upsetting them.
Which brings us to the mute function.
Muting someone on Instagram means that you will see less of their content in your feed and on your stories carousel – without that user knowing that anything is wrong.
What Happens When You Mute an Instagram Account?
The beauty of muting someone on Instagram is that the power to see their posts and updates lies solely in your hands.
While the action of muting means that you won’t see their updates in your newsfeed and high up on your stories carousel, you are still able to search for their profile and view all of their content as normal – but you can do this manually to control visibility.
You can even mute their posts and stories as two separate things – meaning that if they post too many stories that you don’t want to see all the time, but you still want to view their posts as normal, you can easily mute on without the other.
What’s more, from their perspective, nothing changes.
An account that you have muted can still message you and interact with your own posts as normal, making the mute function a really valuable tool in controlling and managing your own Instagram experience without impacting anyone else.
How To Mute Someone on Instagram
- On the Instagram app, search for the user’s profile in the search bar
- Head to their profile
- Click on the ‘Following’ button with the dropdown arrow, which will be sat above their grid feed but below their bio
- Select ‘Mute’ from the pop up menu – with an arrow next to it
- This will open two options – inviting you to mute their posts and their stories from your own Instagram experience. This is where you can control what you see and what you don’t see, either muting both posting types or just one of them
These 5 steps will mute the posts and stories that the user shares, so that you won’t see them unless you search for them specifically. However, this does nothing to stop contact via DM and comments.
Can You Mute Instagram Messages?
If someone is really pestering you and you want to mute their inbox and DM messages as well as their posts, then you can do this from within you inbox.
- From the Instagram home screen, tap the inbox icon (the paper airplane) in the top right hand corner
- Select the chat that you want to mute, and then click on their username at the top of the screen
- This will open a window where you can see all the media you have shared in messages, and other functions – including a ‘Mute’ button
- Click the ‘Mute’ button and then choose to mute messages or mute calls – or both!
Again, the user can still send you messages as normal; what the mute function does is remove the notifications, so that you are not notified every time they send you a message or try to call you. You can still access these messages as you please, directly through your inbox.
