We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. TikTok is the kind of platform where acronyms fast become trends – with users adding these shorthand initials and terms to their captions and TikTok videos in an effort to make the content stand out and potential go viral.
OD is one such acronym which can have a number of meanings depending on how and where it is used. It has one very troubling use outside of the social world, being used by those in medical professions as a way of referring to an overdose. But what else does OD mean?
The Different Meanings of Od
As we just said, outside the world of TikTok you will typically head OD being used as a way of referencing an overdose.
But did you know that this exact same meaning of OD is adopted with a different tone and message on TikTok?
Still used to describe the word ‘overdose’, on TikTok we are increasingly seeing the term OD being used in reference to someone or something which is over the top; too much; excessive.
For example, the term might be used in a comment about a user’s TikTok video, saying “That video is OD” or “They are just OD”.
It is, in short, a way of saying that a user has taken their content too far or is being too excessive.
So, have you seen the acronym OD on your TikTok – and was it being used to depict the traditional version of an overdose or something linked with the newer and more modern slang terminology?
