Confused about the latest ‘Sigma’ trend sweeping across TikTok?
We are seeing more and more videos of strong male figures, often characters from movies and TV shows, alongside the caption “Sigma Energy” or “Sigma Mindset”.
But what does it mean?
In short, ‘Sigma’ is a word used to describe a man with a specific place in society.
Far from falling into the norms of either becoming an alpha or a beta, a ‘Sigma’ male is one which falls into his own, rarer category.
Here are some statements that could be used to describe a male who would be considered a Sigma on TikTok…
- A sigma is a lone wolf type
- A sigma male rejects social hierarchy and does not class himself as an alpha or a beta, because he is not subject to social norms
- A sigma will upset the natural order of things and make decisions based on his own gain
Is Sigma a Serious Label?
There are some users and examples of TikTok content that are clearly ironic, while others seem to take the label more seriously.
Typically, we see ‘Sigma’ attached to characters – often over-hyped versions of males in society, and an OTT representation rather than an accurate portrayal of how someone acts. Having said that there are always users out there who consider themselves to fall into these social categories.
