We’re back with another Instagram acronym – and this is one with a couple of different meaning attached to it, depending on who is using and sending it.

WTM can have two main meanings.

  1. What’s The Move?
  2. What’s The Matter?

The first meaning is most often seeing in interactions between friends, asking each other what the plan is or how they plan on spending time together. A super quick and easy way of finding out the plans (or “moves”) for later that day, over the weekend, or on a future occasion.

The second meaning is a little deeper and is used as a shorthand way of finding out if someone is okay. This tends to be sent between Instagram users who are close to one another and may be sent as a DM or left in the comments section under a photo. It’s a way of checking in with other users quickly.

Does WTM Have Any Other Meanings?

As is so often the case with these social media acronyms, groups of letters can be interpreted in a number of ways. And WTM is no different.

The letters can also be used to say ‘Whatever That Means’ – a turn of phrase which is being increasingly picked up by younger users as a way of sharing that they don’t understand something. Unlike the other versions of WTM, one of which is said in concern and in the other in curiosity, ‘Whatever That Means’ tends to be used in frustration with a situation or misunderstanding.

Whether you use them or not, the various ways of communicating on Instagram mean that acronyms are being used more and more often in comments, DMs, and even captions.

Is WTM something that you’ve seen before – and in what context?
