What Happened to TikTok?
The United States has made headlines recently, with President Biden approving a ban in April 2024 which could see TikTok wiped from US app stores.
The move is part of a security package which also contains funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan – and is designed to protect the data of US citizens amid concerns over whether TikTok is at risk of selling user data to the Chinese government.
The ban is dependent on the parent company ByteDance selling the app; a move which would balance the scales and cease the ban. If not, the app will be removed from app stores, 270 days after the announcement was made.
Whether this ban is carried out remains to be seen and will be dependent on what happens with the platform’s ownership in the coming months. However, the announcement itself is already likely to damage relations between the US and China – with TikTok seeking legal action.
