Is your TikTok app draining your storage and drawing too much space from your device?

If so, then it may be that you need to clear your TikTok cache and free up some of that valuable storage – rather than paying for an additional storage package that you don’t really need.

In addition, clearing your browser and search history, deleting draft videos, and taking other steps to reduce the amount of data stored inside the app can help you to manage your storage capacity and allowance.

Here’s our quick guide on minimising TikTok’s size within your app…

What is TikTok Cache?

TikTok cache is a kind of memory that lives inside the app, remembering the videos that you have viewed and the content that you have engaged with.

The more videos you watch on TikTok, the larger your cache grows – with the app using this information to inform and frame future decisions relating to your account and the kind of content to show you. However, this data is largely trivial and does not need to be stored in TikTok.

As such, one of the best things to do to free up some storage is to clear your cache.

  1. Navigate to your profile page on TikTok
  2. Click on the menu button in the top right hand corner, indicated by three horizontal lines
  3. Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Free Up Space’ under the Cache & Mobile heading
  4. Next to the ‘Cache’ option you will be able to see how many MB are currently stored. A graph above will also show you the percentage of your device storage that’s held by TikTok. Selecting ‘Clear’ next to the Cache option will clear this data and decrease the percentage of space being used

You can also clear your downloads which include effects and filters, as well as offline videos that you have saved. Clearing this will also have a positive effect on the amount of data available on your device.

Deleting Your Drafts

If you are a creator who likes to start videos but then save them and start something new, then you may well have a large number of drafts saved in the app.

If this is the case, then deleting them is a good way to clear some space and purge your account of information and content that you don’t really need!

You can do this manually by selecting each draft and deleting it. Alternatively, you can delete the entire app and reinstall it to rid your account of all drafts and unnecessary data – starting afresh with a re-downloaded app.

We hope this helps! TikTok is a great app on which to engage with other users, but sometimes too much activity can lead to an excess of data and a high percentage of device storage being drunk by the social app.
