In direct contrast to today’s other main headline, Meta may be embracing the positives of AI but it’s not afraid to fight the negatives at the same time.
The social media enterprise, which owns Facebook and Instagram among other apps, has announced that it’s pursuing a legal case against a Hong Kong-based company that owns the app ‘CrushAI’. This app is said to enable users to generate nude and explicit pictures of people without their consent, which are then being posted across Meta platforms.
However, the creation of deep fake images is more difficult to fight than you might think.
Why Are Deep Fake Nudes so Hard to Ban?
The difficulty lies in enterprises like Meta, which promote and encourage users to employ AI tools to generate some images, but not others – looking to ban those that are considered unsavoury.
The difficult lies in the boundary and grey area between the images that Meta’s AI produces, and that which apps like CrushAI create.
While Meta can remove posts which contain images it determines to be unsavoury, the outcome of a case like this remains to be seen.
