First launched by Instagram back in December 2024, trial reels are a way for creators to test and assess the response to content before putting it live on their profile.Â
The difference between trial reels and posted content is that the former uses an audience group that doesn’t already follow you. This means that any time a creator uses the trial reels feature, they experiment by showing their content to a group of users that don’t already follow them – testing response and engagement from an entirely new audience pool.
Why Are Trial Reels Beneficial?
With the rollout of trial reels hitting more creators’ accounts, the benefits are becoming increasingly clear.
Being able to test the response to reels with brand new audience members is a great way to test the virality of a post. It lets the creator know if new users understand the content and respond well to the creative angle.
It also ensures that the assessment of each trial reel is entirely unbiased. Creators won’t get skewed data thanks to an overhaul of likes and comments from friends and family – and will instead get tangible and realistic data from real users.
Finally, trial reels can help to boost profile growth – if you use them wisely! Using this feature to repost old and well-performing reels is a great way to draw in a new audience using content you know performs well – especially when combined with purchased packages of followers for your Instagram profile.
Criteria for Accessing Trial Reels
In order for a creator to qualify for trial reels, they now need to have at least 1,000 followers and be posting from a public account.Â
