Will European VAT Demands Be Upheld Among US-Owned Social Media Platforms?

You may have already read about the fines that are being brought to US tech companies against various European countries and regions. 

But the question remains: will President Trump take it upon himself to step in and fight these fines?

Following the dispute with Canada against its own digital tax imposition, Trump threatened to halt all trade between the US and Canada in retaliation. This move quickly stopped Canada from pursuing its tax demands – with social media giants remaining hopeful that the same will happen amid the bubbling US and Europe tension.

For Instagram in particular, the biggest threat is a VAT claim from Italian authorities, which cites all Italian users as being taxable transactions – whether they were brought to the apps organically or through paid partnerships and marketing tools. This, if upheld, would amount to fines of millions of pounds, payable by Meta as well as LinkedIn and X, to the Italian government – all of which would be backdated to cover every individual user that comes from Italian soil.

How Instagram and Other Companies May Fight These Fines

The hope, among Meta and other tech companies, is that Trump will once again use the threat of a halt in trade discussions to force Europe to back down in its demands.

If not, the hit on profitability across companies like Meta and LinkedIn could be huge.
