There is nothing more annoying than needing to make a change to your Facebook privacy settings and realising that you aren’t sure what your password is.

With social media on personal devices and apps now purposely staying logged in, users no longer need to remember their passwords – instead using using touch or face ID to access their favourite apps.

Which means that, when it comes to changing or re-entering your Facebook password, you probably need to go back to basics.

Here’s a quick guide to everything you need to know about your Facebook password, how to change it, where to find it, and what to do when you just can’t remember it.

Finding Your Facebook Password

Your password for Facebook is located in the Accounts Centre. To access this, tap on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of your Facebook screen and scroll down to the ‘Settings and Privacy’ button. Tap ‘Settings’ then in the Accounts Centre select ‘Password and Security’.

In order to change your Facebook password, you will need to know your current password and have a new one in mind.

Facebook provides a helping hand by letting you know exactly when you last changed your password. It also offers an option to log out of your account on any other device, so that you can be sure nobody else has access to your Facebook once the password has been changed.

Adding two-factor authentication is a recommended step for added privacy, that requires a password and additional security codes when you’re logging in from a device that the app doesn’t recognise.

But what do you do if you need to change your password, and can’t remember the current one?

Accessing a Forgotten Password

If you follow the above steps and get to the ‘Change Password’ page, only to find that you can’t remember your current password, then tap on ‘Forgotten your Password?’ underneath the entry boxes to unlock the recovery options.

A menu will appear, giving you several options for recovering a forgotten password.

These include being sent a code via WhatsApp, via email, or via Facebook notification on another app. Selecting one of these will bypass the need for the current password, instead allowing you to set a new password and resecure your Facebook account.

And there you have it – two of the easiest ways to access and change your Facebook password for extra security, whether or not you can remember your current password. It is always advised that you make your password difficult to guess, and opt to update it on a regular basis for maximum security.
