Asking questions is something that has become increasingly popular across Instagram stories, with users across all profile types able to post questions for their followers to answer, or else ask followers to submit questions of their own.
In this article, we’re taking you through the different ways to ask and use questions on Instagram to increase engagement and interaction across your community.
How to Ask an Open Question For Followers to Answer
If you are creating an Instagram story and want to encourage some engagement from your followers, then asking a direct question is a good way to start conversations.
To do this, follow these steps…
- Open your Instagram app and head to your profile page, clicking on the plus sign in the square box to ‘Create Story’
- Upload the image or video you want as the background to your question post, and then click on the smiley face with the turned up corner along the top of your screen
- Select ‘Questions’
- A pop up will appear on your screen, inviting you to type out a question or invite your followers to ‘Ask Me a Question’. It is here that you can either invite them to submit their own comments and questions, or ask a question yourself to receive a series of responses
This question box will appear for the same 24 hour period as the story, with responses collecting in your inbox.
How to Ask a Question Via a Poll
Alternatively, you can use a poll to create and ask a question to your followers.
Follow the same steps as above, but instead of selecting ‘Questions’ select ‘Poll’.
You can then ask the question along the top of the poll box and list the possible answers that followers can choose from.
This is an especially good way to ask a question where you want a specific type of response.
How to Submit a Question As a Follower
If you are a follower and want to ask another user a question, be they a friend or a celebrity or influencer that you follow, then you can either reach out via DM or wait for them to post an open question box as mentioned in the first section of this article.
To answer a question using the Question Box, simply type your question in the text box below the prompt and it will be sent directly to the poster. They can then answer this via a direct DM, or openly in their stories.
