Scrolling your Facebook feed reveals updates from all across the platform, sharing changes to your friends’ feeds, new posts, page updates, and more.

One of the profile changes that often pops up on a Facebook feed is a change in profile picture.

The default setting, when changing your profile picture, is for the change to be made public and to be shared with your friends and followers. But how about those times when you want to change or try out a new profile picture without making it publicly visible?

Here’s a quick guide to changing your profile picture without letting everyone on Facebook know about the update.

3 Steps to Upload a New Profile Picture in Secret

There is no escaping the fact that friends and followers will spot your new profile picture in time, regardless of how visible the update itself is.

Because your profile picture appears next to your name whenever you post something on Facebook, it follows that users will gradually notice the change and click through to view your new image.

However, what you can do is hide the notification of the profile image change from friends, so that only you know about the change you’ve made…

  1. Navigate to your profile page on Facebook and click on your profile picture, clicking on ‘Select Profile Picture’ from the pop up menu
  2. Choose your profile image from the various options given, which will then take you through to the ‘Preview Profile Picture’ page
  3. Edit the profile picture as required, before making sure to uncheck the box at the bottom that reads ‘Share your update to News Feed’

While your profile picture has to be public in visibility, by unchecking this box you stop the change from being published on friends and family members’ feeds.

We hope this helps!
