Facebook is all about friends, community, and connecting with people you know from all walks and areas of life.

For many of us, Facebook presents an opportunity to reconnect with people who we once knew or used to be friends with, and to catch up and keep in touch with family members and other acquaintances.

With that said, how do you find people on Facebook?

Searching for Friends on Facebook

The simplest way to search for someone on Facebook is to open the app and click on the magnifying glass icon at the top of the page. This is the search bar into which you can type the name of someone you want to search for, and details like location that may help to narrow down the search.

NOTE: Users with the matching name to your search and with mutual friends will appear at the top of your search results. So, you can rest assured that if Facebook can find the person you’re looking for and you have mutual connections, they will appear near the top of the list!

Browse Suggested Friends

Most users will come across regular suggested friends in their news feed.

These users are pulled across to your news feed by Facebook and its algorithm, connecting you to other users via mutual friends and things you have in common. You can choose to ignore these or add the suggested friends as potential friends to connect with.

You can also track down a full list of suggested Facebook friends by heading to your main Facebook menu and selecting ‘Friends’ from the blocks of menu options. At the top above the list of your friends, you will see a tab labelled ‘Suggestions’. Click on this to see a full range of friends who you could add on the app.

Browse Other Friends’ Lists

If you know that one of your friends on Facebook is already connected with someone who you want to find, you can search for them directly in your friend’s own list on their profile.

To do this, head to their profile page and click on ‘Friends’ at the top of their profile feed. You can then scroll through their friends list or search for names directly.

Suffice to say, with Facebook designed to make connecting as easy as possible, there are a number of different ways of finding people who you know on the platform. Once you find someone who you know, tapping the ‘Add Friend’ button is the easiest way to open a direct line of communication with them, enabling you to send them direct messages or communicate via their Facebook wall and profile.
