There are different types of Instagram sticker depending on which part of the app you are interacting and engaging with.
On Instagram stories, stickers are everything and anything that is placed on top of the background image or video. More on how to add these details in a moment…
In Instagram private messages and DMs, stickers are small visuals which can be sent in place of a text message – with many users selecting stickers which add humour to the conversation or are super relatable.
Or you can create your own avatar who is then transitioned into a series of stickers that you can send to your connections on Instagram.
Here’s how to navigate each one of these options…
How to Add Stickers to a Story
Stickers form a big part of an Instagram story because they allow users to add extra details like location and tag other users, layer images on top of each other, or add extra graphics in the form of moving images and static details.
To add stickers to your Instagram story, upload the image or video and then click on the smiley face in the square, with a turned up corner, along the top of your screen.
This opens up the vast and extensive sticker menu, inviting you to add your choice of extras – including the avatars that we will touch on towards the end of this article!
How to Find a Sticker For a DM
Head to your Instagram inbox and select the chat that you want to send a sticker to.
In that chat, look for the smiley face in a square box icon along the bottom of the screen, located to the right of the text message box.
Of the three options, the central one is the stickers – with users able to use the search bar to browse for stickers which match their emotion, the response they want to send, or the kind of conversation they are having.
If, for example, you want to send a dog sticker, then search ‘dog’ and browse the standalone images that work best for your chat. Clicking on a sticker will send it directly to the other user in the chat.
How to Make a Sticker Avatar
Again, head to your Instagram inbox and click on a user, then on the sticker icon along the bottom of the screen to the right of the text box.
From the three options along the bottom of the screen, click on the creature with the big mouth.
You will be invited to create an avatar – and can now go through the process of designing and finessing a character that represents you.
Once complete, Instagram will create a series of stickers using this avatar, replicating common emojis and displaying all manner of emotions and expressions.
This third option is the most personal way of making and using stickers on Instagram!
We hope this helps – which stickers were you already familiar with and which are new to you?
And one final tip… the icon that we mentioned through this article is the go-to for a sticker, so anywhere that you see this icon (the smiley face in a square with a turned up corner) usually means you can add a sticker and personalise your post!
