As one of the world’s leading and most popular social media platforms, Facebook is built to support the sharing of all types of content.
Video has fast become one of the most effective forms of content with regards to engagement, and is the preferred content type for creators, businesses, and those looking to build their personal brand.
Not only is video interactive but it allows users to tap into trends – both audio and visual trends. Whether shared as a reel or a longer piece of video content, uploading footage is one of the best ways to get your brand or message noticed.
But how do you share a video on Facebook?
Well, it depends on which style of Facebook video you want to share.
The Different Types of Facebook Video You Can Share
When sharing video content on Facebook, users have a choice between:
- Post upload
- Reel
- Story
The difference between these lies in both visibility and the length of the video.
How to Add a Video to a Post
The OG way to share a video on Facebook is with a post. This can be on your own feed, on a friend’s feed, or in a Facebook group that you are a part of.
Uploading a video in your post starts by selecting the ‘What’s on your Mind’ box to start a new post, and then navigating down to the content options underneath the text box. Select ‘Photo/Video’ and then either find the video that you want to share or click on the camera icon in the top corner to film something new.
How to Create a Reel
Facebook reels are short form videos which can be compiled of existing footage, newly captured footage, or a compilation of images set to music.
To create a new reel, navigate to your home screen feed on Facebook and select the plus icon along the top of your screen. Select ‘Reel’ from the dropdown menu and then go through the motions of selecting the footage and imagery you want to add to your Reel or filming new clips.
It’s important to note here that often the best reels will include trending audio clips and music and will follow formats which have proven popular across the platform among other creators.
Once your reel has been created, you can add a title and caption and upload it to your Facebook feed or a group feed.
Sharing a Facebook Story
Facebook story content is different again, in that it remains visible on Facebook for just 24 hours after posting.
What this means is that story videos are often more organic and authentic than heavily edited videos and are used to share updates and announcements that are only relevant for a short time.
To create and share a new story on Facebook, that your friends and followers will be able to view for 24 hours after posting, click on that plus sign icon on your home screen feed and select ‘Story’.
From there, upload existing content or film something new, adding layers of text, music, and filters before sharing.
Which Type of Video Is Most Effective?
All three video formats are designed to engage followers and friends in different ways. The best one will depend on your audience and how they use Facebook, as well as your end goal.
If you want to create marketing videos that can be shared and made viral, then reels are the best option.
Standard post videos are best for longer form videos and interviews, while Story videos are great for ad hoc announcements and behind the scenes insight.
Happy filming!
