Instagram DMs are often the preferred method of communication for those who want to send private messages or personal communications to other users.

DMs support everything from text messages to GIFs, photos, videos, reels, and more – and can be sent between two users or in a DM group chat.

But what about when you want to switch off your DMs completely and quieten some of the noise you get from social media? In this article, we’re sharing the steps to follow if you want to switch off DMs and limit the contact you have with other users.

5 Steps to Turn Off DMs

  1. Head to your Instagram profile page then click on the menu button in the top right hand corner (indicated by the three horizontal lines)
  2. Select ‘Settings and Privacy’
  3. Select ‘Messages and Story Replies’ then ‘Message Controls’
  4. Here you can change the options so that you don’t receive messages or message requests from followers and from other users
  5. You can also switch off story replies so that users can’t send you any private responses to your Instagram stories

NOTE: You can also adjust your notifications in notification settings. This will allow you to turn off all notifications of new messages, but without blocking users from sending them. This means that if and when you decide to make a return to Instagram messages, the messages that users have sent are still there waiting for you to read.

So, there you have it. After following these steps, you will be left with a more peaceful Instagram experience without the noise of DM notifications and private messages!
