Your restricted list on Facebook is a collection of users who you are friends with through the platform but whose view of your profile is limited.

Typically, users reserve this list for people who they don’t want to offend but who they don’t want to give full access to. It could be that you want to hide photos, posts, or personal information with these users. Whatever it is, the idea is that from their perspective nothing is different because they are your friend. They are therefore not aware that their access to your content is restricted.

Of course, if things change and you decide that you want to connect with them on a more personal level, then you may well decide to un-restrict them. Which is where this article comes in.

3 Steps to Remove Someone From Your Restricted List

The first and most important thing you need to know about the restricted list is that it can only be edited from a computer. While adding friends to the restricted list can be done from their profile page on your app, removing them can only be done on a desktop or web browser. Once you’re logged into Facebook on a computer, follow these three steps…

  1. Tap on the ‘Friends’ icon in your news feed
  2. Select ‘Custom Lists’ then ‘Restricted’
  3. Click on the ‘x’ icon next to the name of any user who you want to remove from the restricted list

NOTE: Friends will not be informed when they are added to or removed from a restricted list. The only way that they could find out is by viewing your profile through another account and seeing that their visibility of your posts is limited.

What Do Restricted Friends See on Your Profile?

Wondering what exactly it means (and looks like) when you restrict someone?

Well, the exact visibility depends on whether your posts and your profile are public or private. The easiest way to understand the restricted list on Facebook is to consider restricted friends as being connected via friendship but having the visibility of a public user.

If your posts are set to ‘Public’, then they will see them. If your content is set to ‘Friends Only’ then they won’t be able to see it. So being restricted relegates them to the same levels of visibility as a public user.

And remember, friends don’t know that they’ve been added to or taken off of a restricted list – making this an effective way of limiting their visibility and interaction with your content, without offending them. We hope this advice helps you to keep your friends close and your restricted friends closer…
