Most active Instagram users will be familiar with the story carousel on their homepage. The ever-changing carousel of profile pictures tells you which one of your friends, family members, and other connections has recently updated their story – with a quick click taking you straight to a full screen version of their latest story update.

Now, the circle which borders these profile pictures is typically pink and orange – so what happens when the circle suddenly turns green?

The green circle means that you have been added to a Close Friends list – and that the story update you are seeing has been shared exclusively with you and any other friends that the creator has added to their Close Friends list.

What Happens When You View a Green Circle Story?

A Close Friends story works in much the same way as a standard story – except the content is more exclusive and is available only to those who have been added to the list.

The content will still disappear within 24 hours (along with the green circle around the creators’ profile picture), meaning that you need to get in quick if you want to see the content.

It is also worth noting that any story you view with a green circle border cannot be shared with anyone who isn’t in the Close Friends list.

Suffice to say, viewing an Instagram story with a green circle outline is a privilege – and means that you have been added to the Close Friends list of another user!
