Hiding a comment is a quick way of stopping a potentially problematic conversation from starting in the comments under your post – however, it is important to note that the action of hiding a comment can also be inflammatory in itself.
Care must be taken before hiding a comment, mainly because of what happens to comments that are hidden.
How to Hide a Comment
To hide a comment, all you need to do is open the post and press and hold on the comment that you want to hide.
A pop up menu will appear with different options. Click ‘Hide’ from the menu and the comment will disappear from public view.
What a Hidden Comment Looks Like
If you hide a comment on your own post from another user, the post will be greyed out in the comments box under your post. Nobody else will be able to see it on your post.
You may do this with the intention of halting any conversation around the comment. However, if the comment has been visible for a while and you hide it at a later date, you may find that people notice and start questioning your motivation.
Alternatively, if you hide a comment that adds context to a later conversation in the comments, this can also cause problems. This is because the post and its comments will no longer make sense to other users.
As such, hiding comments should be done with care and only as a last resort. There are occasions where it’s better to deal with the issue and post a response rather than hiding the comment, particularly if you want to establish a reputable presence on the app / platform.
