TikTok, like so many other social media platforms, is packed with acronyms and shorthand words and phrases. Some of them are recognisable and even useful in everyday language – and others aren’t.
NPC is one of those acronyms that you may well have come across before in the gaming world or in online conversation – but do you know what it means?
Well, NPC stands for ‘Not-Playable Character’. It is the shorthand term used to describe any gaming character that is in a scene but is not controlled by a real player. Rather, these characters are just a part of the world that has been dreamed up by the game designers and seem to operate on some kind of script – fulfilling a single job and nothing else.
Makes sense for the world of gaming, right?
But what about on TikTok? How can NPC possibly apply to TikTok users?
What does NPC Mean on TikTok?
NPC still stands for ‘Non-Playable Character’ on TikTok, though this is related back to users who exhibit strange behaviour or who observe but never seem to add anything to a conversation.
These users are regarded by others to be dormant and are considered “side characters” – that is, they give very little in the way of contribution in a conversation or content stream, and often take an overly long time to answer to something or respond to a comment.
To put it simply, an NPC on TikTok is a user that doesn’t give much in the way of interaction and communication, and is an inactive part of any community that they are in.
So, how do you know if you’re an NPC?
For those worried about being considered an NPC on TikTok by others, consider how active you are in conversations and groups, whether you join in on community discussions, and how personal your input is when you do speak up. If your conversation is always very surface level and you give little in the way of reactions, then it could be that you are classed as an NPC.
Food for thought indeed…
