Has your unfollow button stopped working?

Typically, when something stops working on Instagram, it is either because of a fault or glitch in the system, or your account has seen too much activity and has been limited as a precaution against spamming and bot accounts.

Why Does Instagram Limit Activity?

If Instagram tracks your follow and unfollow data and finds that you have performed too many actions in a limited time span, then it may block you from doing anything for the rest of the day.

This is because Instagram wants to prevent spam activity, setting a limit on the number of users you can follow and unfollow in a single day. For new users, this limit is 100 unfollows per day, whereas for older accounts you can unfollow up to 150 users in a single day.

If this happens, you need to cease taking action on Instagram and step away from the app for a while, so that Instagram can see that your account is not a bot.

Is There a Glitch in The System?

There is always the chance that something is going wrong on the backend of Instagram, preventing the app from performing certain tasks. This could be as simple as a lack of connection at your end, or a break that Instagram will repair in its next update.

What To Do if Instagram Unfollow Doesn’t Work

If you find that you have hit your cap for the day and cannot unfollow another user, there are other steps you can take.

If you don’t want to see their posts and activity then you can mute them – or if you want to prevent them from being able to contact you, you can restrict or block them.

You could also ask them to perform the unfollow on your behalf by removing your username from their ‘Followers’ list – though this tends to be a pretty strange ask and is not something that users will usually want to ask another user to do.

Whether you can wait another day to unfollow the user, or decide to try one of these other suggestions, we hope that this article helps to protect you as a user, and gives you control over your user experience across the app.
