You’re on Instagram — the world’s most visual social media platform. Your photos and videos will always be the shining stars of your posts. Yet, they’re not complete without killer captions. Punchy, shareable, and thought-provoking Instagram captions can boost the engagement rate you get for a post to the tune of 150 percent.

That’s not too shabby, and it illustrates why you should go the extra mile to make your captions interesting, but that’s sometimes easier said than done.

What should you do when you’re not in a creative mood? Should you turn to a popular Instagram captions app or site — or keep brainstorming until you come up with a winning idea?

What Are Instagram Captions Apps? How Do They Work?

Instagram captions apps can, ostensibly, save the day when you’re simply not feeling the creative energy it takes to write social media captions that resonate with your IG followers. Two different types exist:

  • Some Instagram captions apps invite you to upload photos. From there, they’ll automatically generate caption ideas for you to use as you see fit.
  • Others are text-based. You have to describe the photo, and the Instagram captions app uses the info you share with it to make you a custom caption. In some cases, you’ll be able to pick the tone of the caption, too. This allows you to create professional, casual, sarcastic, or funny captions, for example.

Both types of captions apps are AI-powered, and many very clearly use ChatGPT to make captions for you.

What Is the Best Captions App for Instagram?

We went ahead and tested a string of different Instagram captions apps and sites, with mixed results. Are you curious about them, too? Our favorite options available without signing up for an account include the Ahrefs Instagram captions generator, Planable, Social Pilot, and Mention.

1. the Ahrefs Instagram Captions Generator

Ahrefs, the famous site with tools for search engine optimization, now offers a handy Instagram captions app that should, in theory, make generating the best Instagram captions easier than ever before.

This particular tool can parse images, so all you have to do is upload the photo you want to share. We’re not confident that Ahrefs (or the third-party API it works with, obviously based on ChatGPT architecture) doesn’t retain the images users share, so we used an AI-generated artwork to test this captions generator.

The particular image we shared was of a cute little pants-wearing hedgehog sporting a backpack while taking a stroll in the woods on a sunny fall day. In return, Ahrefs spat out three caption options, complete with hashtags and emojis:

  • “Embarking on a woodland adventure, this little hedgehog is ready to explore the great outdoors with its trusty backpack. Nature awaits! 🌲🦔 #HedgehogAdventures #NatureLovers #ExploreMore”
  • “With a backpack strapped on, this hedgehog is set to discover the wonders of the forest. Every step is a new adventure! 🍃✨ #WoodsWanderer #HedgehogJourney #NatureExploration”
  • “A charming sight in the woods: a hedgehog equipped for adventure! May we all embrace the spirit of exploration. 🌳🦔 #AdventureAwaits #HedgehogLife #IntoTheWild”

The verdict?

The captions we got were on-topic. They accurately described the image we shared. The hashtags were pretty good, and the emojis were on point, too.

As for the Instagram captions themselves? They were a little too obviously AI-generated for our liking. Having said that, these three Ahrefs captions still give you quite a lot of material to work with if you’re super low on creative energy.

If we take bits and pieces of each, we can come up with a cool human-written caption all our own. “Nature awaits! What’s in the backpack? Where’s this little hedgehog going? Only one thing’s for sure — every step is a new adventure!”

In conclusion, this Instagram captions app is a fine tool if you just want a little something to get those artistic juices flowing, but it’s not going to create a caption you can use “out of the box.”

2. Planable Instagram Captions App

Planable might just be the best captions app for Instagram. While it doesn’t let you upload your photos, it’s plenty customizable. You can:

  • Choose your post type — actionable, inspiring, introspective, or promotional.
  • Your writing style, with lots of options ranging from casual to witty, and from enthusiastic to informative.
  • Your caption length.

Once you pick your preferences from those options, Planable asks you for a short description of your photo or video. We entered, “A relaxing walk in the woods on a sunny fall day.”

Here’s what it gave us: “Nothing beats a chill stroll in the woods on a sunny fall day! 🍂☀️ The leaves are putting on a show, and the air is just perfect for some fresh vibes. Grab your favorite cozy sweater, soak in the colors, and let nature do its magic! 🍁🌳”

The verdict?

This Instagram captions app did a lot with a little. We think the caption is a bit wordy, but it’s also less obviously AI-generated than those we got from other apps. Overall, we quite like the result, and you can definitely use this app for creative inspiration.

3. Social Pilot Instagram Captions App

This Instagram captions app is also text-only. You can select the tone you’re after, pick your language, and feed the app keywords that you definitely want to include. We stuck with the original image and described “a little hedgehog walking through the woods on a sunny fall day.”

The resulting caption?

“Exploring the vibrant colors of fall, one tiny step at a time! 🍂🐾 This little hedgehog is soaking in the sunshine and all the beauty the woods have to offer. 🌞✨ #HedgehogAdventures #FallVibes #NatureWalks #ExploringNature #SmallButMighty #WildlifeWonder #SunnyDays #AutumnLeaves #ForestFriends #InstaAnimals”

The verdict?

Meh. This caption reeks of AI, but it can still give you a good starting point for your own caption.

4. Mention Instagram Captions Generator

Mention is definitely not the best captions app for Instagram. The simple prompt “hiking in fall” led to:

“Nothing beats a crisp fall day spent exploring the great outdoors hiking through the changing leaves, breathing in the fresh air, and taking in the breathtaking views is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Who’s with me? ♀️ #fallhiking #naturelover #adventureawaits”

The Verdict?

What’s with the messed-up icons that were probably meant to be emojis? Why so many? This app is nothing special, and we bet you can come up with better captions on your own, even if you’re facing serious writer’s block.

Why You Should Consider Using an Instagram Captions App (and How to Make the Most of It)

Your Instagram captions have a major impact on how many likes and comments you’ll get on your posts, but you can’t always write great one-liners on command. If you’re having one of those days where nothing seems to go right, a good Instagram captions app can get you unstuck.

Experimenting with the different styles and tones these captions generators give you access to may just expand your horizons — and get you thinking about new ways to win over your Instagram followers.

Perhaps the strongest argument in favor of playing with the best captions app for Instagram? You don’t have to actually post the captions it generates on Insta if you’re not feeling it. You can edit them to be better and “more you,” or just discard them and try again.

The Cons: What to Think About Before You Use an Instagram Captions App

We can think of a few different reasons not to use Instagram captions apps and generators, and they’re all important:

  • Outsourcing your captions to an AI (via a third-party platform!) sucks the personality right out of your Instagram account. Your captions are part of what makes you unique on Insta. Are you sure you want to sacrifice that to save some time?
  • Uploading your photos, especially those featuring your face, to an app powered by artificial intelligence might put your images into the pool of data AI models draw on when they create images. Do you want someone else to end up with an AI-generated image of you?
  • AI models have distinct writing voices that are, by now, quite easy to recognize. Your Instagram followers want to hear from you. If they wanted to talk to ChatGPT, they’d do that, but they’re looking at your Instagram profile. Let them hear what you have to say!
  • Even if you have your heart set on getting a little caption-writing help from your friendly neighborhood large language model, you probably already have a ChatGPT account. Why not cut out the middleman and use that?

Another argument against Instagram captions apps? They can be a time suck. While you ask various apps to spin caption after caption, only to decide that those messages aren’t good enough for your next post, you can lose half an hour or more.

Even if brainstorming your own caption ideas takes a while, chances are that you can come up with a unique caption that you love (and that screams “this is me”) way faster than a random AI model.

Alternatives: How You Can Brainstorm Better Caption Ideas Without Using an Instagram Captions App

Now for the fun part. When you decide that even the best captions app for Instagram isn’t good enough for you, but you’re still stuck, you have lots of other ways to make your Instagram captions better!

Try all of these before you leave your creative decisions in the hands of a spin bot!

1. Crowdsource Your Captions

Do you have a personal Instagram account? If you don’t use your Insta to promote your business, it’s actually quite fun to simply caption your photo “Caption this.” Your followers will rush to come up with the most creative caption for your picture, and a cool conversation will ensue. It’s a win-win situation!

You can do the same thing off Instagram. Simply ask the most creative people in your life to come up with a great caption for that photo. You might be surprised by the results!

2. Set Yourself Little Challenges

“They” say that necessity is the mother of invention for a reason. You can force yourself to write more interesting Instagram captions by setting clear limits. Some fun little challenges that can help you take your Instagram captions to the next level include:

  • Setting a “theme of the week.” That theme could be “inspirational,” “brutally honest,” “green,” “back to basics,” “three words,” or anything else. Every caption you post this week has to follow the theme.
  • Song lyrics only. This one speaks for itself.
  • Cryptic captions only. Describe your photos, but without actually saying what’s in them, and make them as mysterious as possible.
  • All captions must rhyme. You decide which rhyming scheme to follow. Good luck!
  • Write all captions from the POV of your camera.
  • Only post captions your mother, best friend, other half, or coworker wrote for you.

These approaches will add a breath of fresh air to all your Instagram captions, and nope, you don’t even need an app for that.

3. Write the First Thing That Comes to Mind

You’re after an Instagram caption. It’s not rocket science. Unless you’re running a business account (in which case this is a bad idea — skip it), simply try captioning all your posts with the first thing that comes to mind for a while.

It might get a little messy, but this captions strategy is also the polar opposite of the bland AI-generated captions that are cropping up everywhere these days.

4. Try Our Massive Instagram Captions Lists

Twicsy has a massive database of blog posts with cool Instagram captions. Our lists of captions include those sorted by topic (fairy Instagram captions, NYC Instagram captions, and so on) or tone (cute Instagram captions, savage Instagram captions, and more).

Your mileage may vary, but these lists give you many of the same benefits of Instagram captions apps and sites, without the tell-tale signs of artificial intelligence. They’re great for inspiration, and if you happen to find a caption that’s already perfect as it is, you can be sure that an AI model didn’t write it!

The Final Verdict: Should You Use an Instagram Captions App?

We could see ourselves using Instagram captions apps as inspirational tools — on desperate days devoid of creativity. Some can certainly kickstart brainstorming operations.

Would we post any of these captions as they first appear? Nope, and we don’t think you should, either. Your Instagram account is too important to outsource your personality to a random app. Your captions are where your unique writing style should live, and no captions generator can replace it.
