A recent report shows that more Americans than ever before are now getting their news updates direct from social media – particularly amid the rise in video sharing across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

While the study used to prove this theory did comment on the potential over-representation of younger users within its data capturing activity, it opens conversation around how social media is being used.

For the younger generation who use social media as part of their everyday routine, the platforms aren’t just for communication and engagement but also for updating themselves on current affairs and events. 54% of participants in the study claimed that social media is their main source of news, with 50% also naming TV as a primary source, and 48% turning to official news sites.

How Can Content Creators Use This Data to Their Advantage?

It seems as though an increasing number of social media users put their trust in the information that they see on social media – something that content creators can use to boost both views and engagement.

It has long been recognised that trending topics and audio clips help creators to win favour with users – but this new report and the data from it suggests that commentary relating to prolific news could also boost visibility of a profile.

If, for example, a content creator was to purchase views and followers for their Instagram profile from a reputable source, the study indicates that many of those followers could be retained through a strategic rollout of news and relevant commentary. This, layered with engaging, fresh content, can help creators to not only build a strong following but keep it.
