Trump has hinted at another extension, potentially delaying the US-wide TikTok ban by another 75 days.
With just a week to go until the existing deadline, reports suggest that Trump is likely to approve another extension. This will give TikTok yet more time to find a US buyer who will own the app and thereby approve its safe use across the United States.
And while this is good news for users, especially those who rely on high follower numbers and engagement stats as part of their online profile, is it just delaying the inevitable?
Why is TikTok at risk of being banned?
The ban is the worst case scenario outcome of a provision which was approved in April 2024, that demands the app be sold into US ownership in order to remain in operational. This decision was made as part of the ‘Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act’ and was signed off by president Biden – giving TikTok 9 months to find a buyer.
It didn’t, and was temporarily banned before Trump’s administration came into effect one day after the ban. The rest is history – with the saga continuing.
