The For You page on each user’s TikTok is geared towards content that the app thinks they will enjoy and find interesting.
The earliest indication that TikTok gets and uses to curate this For You page is your sign up information – that is, the interests that you specified when first signing up for the app. And while it is not possible to return to this screen and change your interests, there are ways of letting TikTok know what you want to see more (and less) of.
Selecting Your Interests
Of course, the easiest way to let TikTok know what you want to see is with that initial interests selection. This is the most streamlined way of controlling your For You page and the content you see, directly telling TikTok what you like and what you don’t like.
But as this occurs early in your TikTok journey, and things and personal interests are likely to change with time, the likelihood of this selection needing to change is high.
Unfortunately, there is no option to change the interests you select. Which is where the following options come in…
Option 1: Indicate ‘not Interested’ on Certain Videos
It’s very easy to see a video or TikTok post that you’re not particularly interested in and simply scroll past it.
However, if you take a few moments to let TikTok know that you’re not interested in that particular content, you will find that the information starts to resonate – leaving you with fewer related and similar videos as a result.
To do this, press and hold on any post that you are not interested in and select ‘Not Interested’ (indicated by the broken heart icon). Alternatively, you can click on the sweeping arrow Share icon located to the right hand side of the video and select the same ‘Not Interested’ button.
Option 2: Engage With Videos You Are Interested In
As well as liking, commenting on, and sharing TikTok videos that you see on your For You page that are still of interest, users who want to add new interests to their TikTok algorithm should actively search for things they want to see and be sure to follow new accounts and related topics.
Your activity on the app plays a major role in letting TikTok know what you want to see and what you don’t. Posts that you engage with on a regular basis will be classed as high interest. In fact, even the terms that you search for will start to resonate over time – with TikTok anticipating specific searches and bringing more of that content into your For You feed.
How Long Does It Take to Change Your Interests?
When it comes to adjusting the kind of content you see on TikTok, you need to be prepared to play the long game.
TikTok constantly assesses user activity, acknowledging what users are searching for and engaging with, and adding relevant and related content the For You feed. After all, the aim of the For You feed is to deliver a bespoke and curated collection of TikTok posts to each user.
