The countdown is on for TikTok to find a US-based buyer. And even with Trump’s extensions to the deadline, it seems as though US usage of the platform and app remains under threat.

The fact remains that TikTok has technically and legally now been banned from the United States, and so the fact it remains operational and accessible to US citizens means that the platform is in violation of the terms of its ban.

Of course, no legal action will be taken at present, because of Trump’s decision to turn a blind eye and to place an extended deadline on the enforced sale. But it leaves TikTok at risk of being banned at any time.

When is the Current Deadline Set?

At this moment, the deadline for a sale of TikTok into US ownership for United States usage 17th September 2025.

Technically, if a buyer is not found and confirmed by then, the app will fall out of usage in the United States – and all those creators who rely on it will have to transition over to other platforms.

But there is hope on the horizon for those with large follower pools and high engagement, thanks to a continued Consortium effort to buy the platform. Even with one partner recently backing out of the group, President Trump’s support of continued US access to TikTok means that a sale and the restoration of TikTok’s reputation remains likely.
