Facebook groups are one just one outlet for community building on the platform, inviting users to join groups with a shared interest – be it a location, hobby, or something else.
Facebook groups can be private or public, with users able to click a single button to join the group or request access and membership which is then granted by group admin members.
In this article, we’re talking through the different types of group available on Facebook and how to join them.
How to Join an Open Group
If you come across an open or ‘Public’ group on Facebook that you want to join, the process is incredibly easy.
Simply navigate to the main group feed and click on the big ‘Join Group’ button at the top of your screen. Once you’re a member (a process that takes seconds to confirm), you can invite your Facebook friends to join the group too or you can change your notifications from the group via the dropdown menu at the top of the page.
Wondering why to join a public group if you can see all its posts without becoming a member? Joining a group means that you don’t miss out on updates and will bring new posts from the group into your main Facebook feed.
How to Join a Private Group
If you come across a private group that you want to join, the process requires a few more steps and will take a little longer to confirm.
Typically, you will have to request membership to a private group. This request may come with a set of questions that you need to answer – mainly relating to your location (if you are looking to join a community group) and to check that you are not a bot.
Admin members of the group will review all requests to join. Until you are accepted as a member, you will not be able to see any of the posts in the group feed and will not be able to interact with other members.
Once you’re a member, you have the same access to notification settings as with a public group – allowing you to tailor your feed and see as many updates as you like.
With so many groups available on Facebook, users can immerse themselves in a variety of different communities – enhancing their Facebook experience and personalising their feed with content that interests them.
