Your Facebook profile picture is like a window to your profile.

When users are searching for people they know, they will often use a combination of name and profile picture to work out if they know someone – especially when there are several users with the same name.

Changing a profile picture is incredibly straightforward and can be done from a photo view or by heading into your Facebook profile, selecting your profile picture window, and clicking on ‘Upload New Profile Picture’.

But what about removing a profile picture?

Understanding the Profile Pictures Album

Most Facebook users will change their profile picture on a semi-regular basis, keeping their profile up to date with relevant information (not to mention the best and most flattering images!)

When you click on a user’s profile picture at the top of their feed, not only will their current photo open in a full screen view but you are then able to scroll through their past and previous profile photos.

This profile images album is a collection of images that the user has deemed worthy of profile picture status in the past – and is an interesting insight into their lifestyle and how active they are on the app.

With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at how to delete or remove one of these profile pictures…

3 Steps to Delete a Profile Picture

  1. If you change your mind about a profile picture, deleting it is easy. Simply navigate to your own profile and click on your profile picture
  2. With the image open in full screen, click on the three dots icon in the top right hand corner of the screen
  3. Select ‘Delete Photo’ from the pop up menu

NOTE: If you delete your current profile picture without replacing it, your photo will be replaced by the new user grey silhouette. You can then upload a new profile picture or leave your profile without a personalised photo.

Opting for the latter is viewed by some as an extra layer of privacy by making your profile harder to find, though this may also impact your connections with friends and your profile growth.
