Facebook Messenger may be controlled via a separate app, but it is still very much a part of the complete Facebook experience.

Users who communicate via Facebook Messenger can do so through a different app on their mobile device or can access messages via a pop up chat window in a web browser – depending on their user preference.

One of the good things about messenger is that you can sign into your account on different devices without being automatically logged out from another device. But what do you do when you’re signed in somewhere public, or need to sign out of messenger before handing your device over to someone else?

Can You Sign Out of Messenger?

Believe it or not, there is no log out function on Facebook Messenger.

While you can switch off your Active status so that users don’t know if and when you are online, and you can of course delete the app when you want to, you cannot log out of the app completely.

Having said that, you can remove your Facebook account from the Accounts Centre and thereby close access to Messenger and to your profile. Alternatively, you can log out of Facebook via the standard platform app, removing your access to your profile and to Messenger.

How to Log Out of Facebook

To log out of Facebook, click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and then scroll right to the bottom of the menu.

Select ‘Log out’.

This will log you out of your account. It is also worth seeing which other devices you are currently logged into via your Meta Accounts Centre, logging out of any devices that you do not recognise or that you no longer have access to. This is an important part of your privacy and data security and will help to keep you safe as a user.

Don’t Want to Use Messenger Anymore?

You may not be able to sign out of Facebook Messenger, but that doesn’t mean you have to keep using the app.

Deleting the app will remove the data and ensure that you do not receive notifications and other updates. What’s more, if you do decide to access Private Messages on Facebook, you can still do so with ease via a browser, using the pop up messenger page in the main website.

We hope this helps to improve and streamline your social media experience!
