Group chats are a great way to engage multiple users in conversation.
From bringing friends together in a single chat, to introducing users who don’t know each other, a group chat on Messenger is a quick and easy way of sending a message to lots of people at the same time – sparking a multi-way conversation in the process.
But group chats can sometimes become overwhelming, with the topic of conversation shifting or the tone turning sour. You might even find that the chat is no longer relevant and therefore falls redundant in your inbox. Whatever the reason may be, sometimes you’ll find that it’s time to call time on a group chat and delete it.
Which is where this article comes in.
Can Anyone Delete a Group Chat?
Only the creator of a group chat can delete it completely.
The options for other participants are to mute the group chat, to block a member from being able to send you message, to report the chat, or to leave it yourself.
When you leave a group chat, you delete it from your own inbox and your own Messenger experience – however, the group chat remains active for all other participants.
So, the first thing to take from this article is that while you can remove yourself from any group chat, you can only truly delete it if you are the user who first created it.
How to Leave or Delete a Group Chat
The process for removing yourself from a group chat as a participant, or deleting it completely as admin, is simple.
First you need to navigate to and open the chat. Then click on the group chat name or the list of participants across the top of the screen and scroll down to the bottom of the chat menu. Select ‘Leave Chat’ or ‘Delete Chat’ depending on your status as a participant.
And voila! This will either completely delete the chat or delete it from your own inbox.
