Facebook pages are an excellent tool for those looking to build a business or establish a community with a common interest – be it a hobby, location, activity, or something completely different.
A Facebook page represents a corner of the social media platform that users can follow and interact with as much or as little as they like. Active followers can share posts, like and comment on updates, and even add their own posts to the page feed.
But as a page manager, sometimes managing multiple pages can get a little overwhelming – even if you spread the work among a handful of different admin members and page managers. Which is where this article comes in.
In it, we’re discussing whether it’s possible to merge two pages together – and how to do it.
Can You Merge Pages on Facebook?
There are several eligibility criteria for merging pages – with the tool only available in certain locations at present.
The criteria to merge pages includes the following:
- You must have access to both pages as a page manager
- Both pages must have the same name and be designed to represent the same thing
- Both are listed with the same physical location
- Both pages fall under the same Business Manager account
It’s important to note here that you cannot merge pages which are not of equal verification status – that is, you cannot merge a verified page with one which has not been verified. You also cannot merge global pages, and you cannot merge any page which is listed as the primary page for a Business account.
What Happens When You Merge Two Pages?
If and when you successful merge two Facebook pages, you will find that the page followers are combined into one big pool.
Not only this, but check-ins from users who tag both pages will be merged into the same feed.
But the sharing ends there – because one of the crucial things you need to understand is that the page you merge with a new host will be stripped of all its posts, photos, reviews, and ratings. In short, you will retain all the information and posts on the page that survives the merge – however, the one which is integrated into the new host page will lose its posts and other updates.
Because of this, users need to make sure to update any URL’s or campaigns that they have which direct towards the old, merged page, because this page will no longer exist.
5 Steps to Merge Two Pages on Facebook
- Before you can merge two pages, they both need to be active under the same name. In all likelihood, one of the pages will need to be edited so that it has the same name as the other, to ensure the merge can be completed. Do this by requesting a name change within the page settings
- Once both have the same name, you need to log into Facebook on a desktop device
- Head into the page that you want to merge into – i.e., the new host page
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Settings’
- Choose ‘Page Setup’ then ‘Merge Pages’
- You’ll see an option to ‘Merge Multiple Pages’ – next to it, click ‘Start Request’
If you are unable to see the Merge Multiple Pages option then it may be that this feature us not available in your location, or that your pages don’t meet the criteria listed above.
In this case, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Facebook to find out more about how best to merge your pages – or you can opt for the manual journey of encouraging users on one page to migrate to a new one and then delete the old page yourself. While this may cause you to lose some followers, the benefit lies in knowing that those who do migrate over are active and interested in your page content!
