Who Made TikTok?

Most users don’t know that TikTok existed before it was TikTok – under the name Musical.ly.

Musical.ly was acquired by the parent company named ByteDance in 2017. It was subsequently merged with an existing concept for TikTok and launched as a short form video platform – supporting the kind of viral content that Musical.ly was known for, with a broader emphasis on dance trends, challenges, and other popular video templates and concepts.

So, while TikTok existed as a form of social platform before it was formerly named and known as TikTok, the app (as it is today) was made by ByteDance and its founder Zhang Yiming.

In the following years, TikTok rose in prominence and became the viral sensation that we recognise it as now. This was helped by the popularity of the app among celebrities, especially in 2018 when the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Will Smith, and others got on board.

Ever since then, TikTok has gone from strength to strength and now boasts over one billion active users around the world.
