Facebook’s Profile Lock feature was a privacy rollout, first introduced in 2020 in India before being gradually introduced to other countries.
What Is Profile Lock?
The feature is essentially another layer of privacy for users, allowing them to lock their profile and limit the visibility of their information and past posts, so that only their Facebook friends are able to see them.
The simplest way of communicating what this feature is all about, is to liken it to a strict privacy setting regimen on your profile. It’s somewhat of a shortcut, activating all of the core privacy settings and profile blocks, in one move.
But there’s a catch…
Why Is the Profile Lock Feature Not Available on My Device?
Facebook’s Profile Lock feature is still a relatively new tool on Facebook and is only available in a limited selection of countries.
It’s initial release in 2020 covered India, and then expanded out to cover other countries including Egypt, Morocco, and Turkey.
Other reasons why the profile lock feature may not work on your device, or may not be available, include:
- Your profile is set to professional mode. Professional profiles are designed to create more of a public profile and platform, and so this mode does not support a full privacy lockdown.
- Your version of the app is outdated. New features are often not supported or not available on outdated or old versions of the app. In order to be able to access all the main features and new tools, you’ll need to update your app.
- Your Facebook cache is full. The cache is a store of data that is designed to make Facebook load more quickly. However, allowing this cache to become too packed with data can impact the efficiency across the rest of the app.
With all this in mind, there are other ways of activating the same level of privacy on your profile – even if the feature isn’t available in your country or on your profile. Here are some of the best ways of keeping your personal information and posts private and secure.
How to Keep Your Profile Private and Secure
The first thing you can do is limit visibility of your past posts. Head into your settings and select ‘Posts’ from the settings menu. Then tap ‘Limit Who Can See Past Posts’ and turn this filter on.
In the same part of the menu, you can also update who can see all future posts that you share, making sure that this is set to ‘Friends’ as opposed to ‘Public’.
And you can of course change your ‘Default Audience Setting’ – an umbrella move which allows you to open your profile and updates to a wider audience, or limit who can see your posts to a ‘Friends Only’ or ‘Custom’ audience.
Other steps you can take to control and influence visibility of your profile and information include hiding your active status, blocking users who you don’t want to interact with, and only allowing friends to follow you.
While the Profile Lock feature is an elusive part of the Facebook experience that remains reserved for users in specific countries and locations, there are plenty of ways of exercising the same control over your own profile and its visibility.
We hope this advice helps you to feel safe and secure when browsing and using the Facebook platform.
