Facebook reels are among some of the most popular content types at the time of writing in 2024 – and, if we’re honest, for the past few years!

Reels are short form videos which can be up to 90 seconds in length, compiled of footage collected by the creator and a selection of editing tools and filters that Facebook offers.

They are not dissimilar in style to TikTok’s, with users considering reels to be both highly shareable and incredibly compelling. For businesses, they provide a great outlet for product information or introductions, while for personal users they offer a chance to pull together footage from memorable occasions or days out.

NOTE: Reels can be compiled of several clips from different occasions and can also include photos as well as the video clips. Keep reading for a quick guide on how to pull it all together into a single reel.

5 Steps to Create a Reel on Facebook

Provided your reel does not surpass the maximum limit of 90 seconds, you can add as many clips and recordings as you like – including a combination of photos and videos.

  1. Head to your profile page on Facebook and select ‘Reels’ along the top menu above your feed
  2. Click on the big blue button that reads ‘Create Reel’
  3. To upload existing images and footage, make your selection from the grid of images pulled through from your device album (tap the ‘Select Multiple’ button before starting your selection if you want to add more than one video clip / photo)
  4. To record new footage, click on the camera button in the top left hand corner of the screen
  5. Once you’ve got all the footage you need, click ‘Next’ which will take you through to the Sound Sync and Editing screens. On Sound Sync, Facebook will recommend songs to compliment your content, or you can search for the perfect song. If you would rather have the videos original audio than a synced song, you can remove the music option completely
  6. Click ‘Next’ to enter the editing screen, where you can add text and other effects
  7. Once you’re happy with your final reel, head to the Share screen where you need to add a caption, adjust visibility, and tag any people or locations you want to tag

Hit ‘Share Now’ to send your reel through to your Facebook feed.

Tips for Creating a Great Reel

Before we leave you to explore and create your own reels, here are a few tips on how to make content that stands out and that will ignite great engagement from your friends and followers…

Add a song that enhances the content of your reel. Music and/or audio can make or break a great reel and can help a video or reel to go viral. Don’t be afraid to tap into trending songs and add your own spin to popular formats.

Less is more. Just because a reel can be up to 90 seconds in length, doesn’t mean you have to hit the maximum limit every time.

Finally, create great and incredibly engaging captions that add context but don’t give too much away. A caption is like a title that should let followers and friends know just enough to want to watch your reel through to the end…

Happy creating!
