Facebook is built for friendships, connections, and communities. From local groups to hobby-inspired pages, content creator Live streams, and private friendships, Facebook users are encouraged to add friends and join different networks across the platform to elevate their experience.
However, like any social media platform, Facebook has a cap on the number of friends that a single user can have. The reasons for this vary, but it’s likely that the cap exists to reduce the spread of fake and bot accounts, and to make accounts easier to manage.
The maximum number of friends that a single Facebook user can have is 5,000.
This excludes an additional 1,000 queued friends that they can have waiting, so that when someone unfriends them or an account is deactivated, a queued friend can fill the vacancy.
What to Do When You Reach the 5,000 Limit
If you have hit 5,000 friends but there are new people who you want to add to your friendship circle, then there are a few things that you can do…
- Unfriend some people who are currently in your friends list, to make room for new ones
- Create a new Facebook account and start from scratch with a new community of friends
- Encourage users to ‘Follow’ you so that they can still see your content and stay up to date with your posts, even without being your friend
5,000 friends is a lot – and the chances are that you won’t reach anywhere near this cap if you are an average user. However, for business profiles, content creators, and budding influencers, knowing about this cap, and how to navigate it, is important.
If you’re trying to build a community for your business or as a creator / influencer, then your best option is to build a Page rather than a profile. A page can have an unlimited number of likes and can facilitate tangible growth for a Facebook community, that you can track and control more easily than with a private profile.
Happy creating!
