Every time you upload a photo or a post to Facebook, you have the opportunity to edit the visibility and control who can see the post and/or images.
But what about existing photos? Is there a way of changing the visibility on an existing photo and making it private?
How to Upload a Private Photo
If you want to upload a photo memory but want to restrict visibility and the number of users who can see it, then you can easily do so during the upload process.
To add a photo, navigate to your profile page and click in the ‘What’s on your mind’ box.
Tap the ‘Photo/Video’ icon below the text box and select all the photos that you want to add.
To make them private, click on the blue button underneath your profile name that reads ‘Friends’. This opens a Post Audience menu, giving you control over whether the post and photos are public, visible to friends, visible only to specific friends, or private (that is, only visible to you).
This setting adjusts the visibility of this specific post and the photos in it. To make a broader change and to adjust visibility of your full profile, you will need to head into your Facebook settings.
How to Change a Photo to Private Mode
If you have an existing photo that you want to change to private mode, you can do so by following these steps:
- Head to your profile page on Facebook
- Select ‘Photos’ from the menu above your Details and beneath your profile photo
- Select the photo that you want to set to private mode from the grid of images that appears
- Click on the three dots in the top right hand corner of the photo and select ‘Edit Post Privacy’
- Set your privacy as above, opting for Public, Friends, Specific Friends, or completely private
NOTE: While you cannot make other people’s photos private, you can remove your tag which will remove the photo from your profile. The friends of the original poster will still be able to see the photo, but it will no longer be searchable via your page.
And there you have it! Two ways of making your photos private on Facebook, with an option for existing photos and for new uploads. We hope this helps you to feel in control of the content you put on Facebook and who can see it!
