From getting married to seeking a little extra privacy, there are plenty of reasons why you might decide to change your username on Facebook.
But before we share the steps to change your username, it’s important to understand what the username is and how it differs from your profile name.
When you search for a Facebook user and visit their profile, it is their profile name that sits under their picture and at the top of their feed. Their username is the name at the end of their profile URL and is unique to their profile.
You can use both a username and a profile name to search for someone on Facebook. However, while there may be several people with the same profile name on the platform, usernames are completely unique – making them a safer bet when it comes to searching for and seeking out the right individual user.
Here’s how to change your username so that it accurately reflects your profile and personal details…
5 Steps to Change Your Username on Facebook
- Click on the menu button in the bottom right hand corner of your Facebook page
- Select ‘Settings and Privacy’ then ‘Settings’
- Click through to the ‘Accounts Centre’
- Tap ‘Profiles’ then select your Facebook profile
- Tap ‘Username’
This will open a menu that invites you to edit your username. Because this needs to be a unique name to you, there may be some trial and error involved as you find a username that hasn’t already been used by someone else, but which is relevant to you.
Once you’re happy with the change, select ‘Done’ at the bottom of the page – and you’re all set!
